Explore Rotterdam like a local

Jennifer Hudson
June 30, 2021

Increasing tourism in Rotterdam has many begging for more local experiences. With the Netherlands being one of the most advanced countries when it comes to bike infrastructure there is no better way to explore like a local than on a bike.   Find a Donkey and start exploring some of these hidden gems.

Eliand van Brienenoord

Finding beautiful nature in a city like Rotterdam is not the first thing you think of doing when visiting, but just under Van Brienenoord Bridge  is a beautiful island full of fields, small pools, open waters and a nature playground. The whole island would take 45 minutes to explore on foot but with a bike by your side you can enjoy it with some wind in your hair. A great place to start off the day and maybe have a morning breakfast picnic.

Pedestrian Maastunnel

Want to have a sci-fi experience? Try cycling 1.2km in an underwater tunnel. The Maastunnel was opened during WW2 and connects different sides of the city. Occasionally decorated by different lights during holidays it can feel like going through something you would see in a movie.

Recycled Park

After exiting the tunnel why not ride over to the wondrous Recycled Park and get a glimpse of how Rotterdam is tackling pollution and trying to be a bit more green. The Recycled Park collects plastics that fall into Nieuwe Maas. It is then recycled and used to make floating platforms, creating new green areas in our city.

Markthal

Probably the least hidden area here, we had to include it on our list because of its great combination of food, leisure, living, and parking. Meaning after a long day it’s the perfect place to find a spot to rest your legs from biking and grab a bite to eat. Markthal offers something for everyone, from “The World of Taste”, a centre for education, information and innovation in healthy eating, to restaurants and even art displays.   For more blog posts about biking in Rotterdam click here
